University of Florida Concert Bands

 

The UF School of Music offers multiple concert bands designed for students of all degree programs. All UF Bands enjoy the luxury of rehearsing in the Steinbrenner Band Hall, a state-of the-art facility that includes a large rehearsal hall equipped with studio recording capabilities. In 2014, the UF Bands celebrated their 100-year anniversary of maintaining a strong tradition of excellence through performance.

Wind Symphony
Dr. David Waybright, Musical Director

 

Under the direction of Dr. David Waybright, the Wind Symphony is the University of Florida’s premier performing ensemble. The ensemble meets throughout the year and is comprised of 55 of the school’s top undergraduate and graduate wind and percussion performers. The Wind Symphony is dedicated to performing advanced wind band literature and regularly participates in commissioning new works. In addition, the ensemble has released a number of audio CDs under the Mark Custom label and is scheduled to produce another commercially released recording during the upcoming spring semester.  The Wind Symphony has performed at a variety of events throughout the country including the American Bandmasters Association, Music Educators National Convention, College Band Directors National Association, and Florida Music Educators Association conferences. Recently, the ensemble performed at the 2013 New York Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall and internationally at the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference in Singapore. The Wind Symphony offers flexible instrumentation and player rotation in order to provide members of the ensemble with a variety of challenges, responsibilities, and playing experiences. Membership in the ensemble is open to students of all degree programs and is selected by audition.

Symphonic Band

The UF Symphonic Band, under the direction of Professor Jay Watkins, is designed for undergraduate music and non-music majors. The 60-member ensemble frequently performs challenging literature in a variety of musical styles on campus and throughout the state of Florida. The Symphonic Band is offered in both the fall and spring semesters and membership in the ensemble is selected by audition and open to students of all degree programs.

Concert Bands
Dr. Chip Birkner, Musical Director
OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS

 

The Concert Bands, under the direction of Dr. Chip Birkner, are for University of Florida students. They meet during the spring semester and are comprised primarily of non-music majors. The Monday/Wednesday Concert Band meets from 7:20p-9:10p and the Tuesday/Thursday Band meets from 9:35a:-11:30a. The ensembles perform works from traditional symphonic band as well as contemporary literature for the wind band medium. These are NOT audition-based ensembles. All interested students should register for the class MUN 1120 and meet the first day for chair placement.
